Snapchat has announced a major update to its Spotlight recommendation system, saying it will no longer reward fully AI-generated videos. The move is part of the company’s broader effort to promote authentic, human-created content while reducing the spread of low-quality AI-generated posts, often referred to as “AI slop.”
The company confirmed that its recommendation algorithms will now prioritize videos created by real people, encouraging creators to share original stories, experiences, and creative ideas instead of relying entirely on artificial intelligence.
In a statement, Snapchat said it wants Spotlight to remain a platform where users can discover authentic creativity and personal storytelling, adding that original human perspectives continue to offer lasting value.
AI Can Still Be Used as a Creative Tool
Although Snapchat is reducing the visibility of fully AI-generated content, it is not banning AI from the platform.
Creators can still use Snapchat’s AI-powered editing tools to improve their videos. Features such as AI-assisted editing, caption generation, visual enhancements, and other creative tools will continue to be available. However, videos that are entirely generated by AI without meaningful human involvement may receive lower visibility in Spotlight recommendations.
This approach reflects Snapchat’s belief that AI should assist creators rather than replace them.
A Growing Industry Trend
Snapchat’s latest decision follows a growing trend across the technology industry as major platforms respond to increasing criticism of repetitive and low-quality AI-generated content.
Earlier this year, Snapchat had already started showing less AI-generated content in Spotlight, signaling its intention to improve content quality.
Other technology companies have also introduced similar measures:
- LinkedIn recently launched a feature allowing users to report posts that appear to be AI-generated or low quality.
- Substack introduced tools to help readers identify newsletters that may have been created using AI.
- Meta removed an Instagram AI feature after users criticized its ability to modify public photos using artificial intelligence.
- YouTube recently updated its monetization policies, making it harder for repetitive, template-based AI content to earn revenue.
These changes highlight a broader industry shift toward rewarding originality while discouraging mass-produced AI content.
What This Means for Creators
For Snapchat creators, the update means that originality will play an even bigger role in reaching audiences.
Videos based on personal experiences, tutorials, travel, education, entertainment, or real-life storytelling are expected to perform better than content generated entirely through AI.
Creators can continue using AI to speed up editing or improve production quality, but Snapchat is making it clear that genuine human creativity will remain the foundation of Spotlight recommendations.
Snapchat Expands Safety Measures for Younger Users
Alongside the AI-related update, Snapchat also recently introduced new safety protections for younger users.
Under the latest changes, users aged 13 to 15 can only share Spotlight posts with people they mutually follow. The company says this measure is designed to reduce privacy risks, including doxxing and unwanted contact.
As generative AI tools become more widely available, social media platforms are facing increasing pressure to balance innovation with content quality. Snapchat’s latest policy demonstrates that while AI remains an important creative tool, platforms are placing greater value on authentic human-created content that offers originality, trust, and meaningful engagement.
For creators, the message is clear: AI can enhance creativity, but genuine ideas and personal storytelling are more likely to stand out in the evolving social media landscape.
