Discord has acknowledged that a bug in its AI-powered moderation system wrongly suspended thousands of users over the past two months.
The company confirmed that harmless images such as spreadsheets, chessboards, game textures, and transparent backgrounds were mistakenly identified as prohibited content. Around 200 additional users were affected before the bug was discovered and fixed.
What Caused the Problem?
Discord’s moderation system compares uploaded images against databases of known harmful content. However, a software bug caused false matches to automatically trigger account bans before the review process worked correctly.
Discord says the issue has now been resolved, and all wrongly suspended accounts are being restored.
Users Raise Concerns
Many affected users shared their experiences on X and Reddit, saying they lost access to communities, workspaces, and gaming servers because of the incorrect bans.
The incident has also renewed concerns about relying too heavily on AI for content moderation without stronger human oversight.
