Chinese artificial intelligence company SenseTime has introduced a major initiative called the Galaxy Project, aiming to strengthen the country’s domestic AI chip ecosystem and reduce dependence on foreign hardware.

The company announced that it is working with nearly 20 technology partners, including AI chip manufacturers, infrastructure providers, research institutions, and universities, to build a stronger AI computing network powered by locally developed semiconductor technology.

The project is part of China’s broader effort to accelerate AI innovation using homegrown computing infrastructure.

Why the Galaxy Project Matters

As AI models continue growing larger and more powerful, companies need enormous computing resources to train and run them.

For years, many AI developers have relied heavily on Nvidia GPUs. However, increasing demand, supply constraints, and global technology competition have encouraged Chinese companies to invest in domestic alternatives.

SenseTime says the Galaxy Project is designed to help organizations build AI systems using Chinese-developed chips while improving performance, efficiency, and scalability.

Building a Complete AI Infrastructure

Instead of focusing only on AI chips, SenseTime wants to create an entire AI ecosystem.

The Galaxy Project includes partnerships with domestic chip manufacturers, cloud infrastructure companies, research laboratories, universities, and software developers.

The company believes combining hardware, software, AI models, and commercial applications will help accelerate AI adoption across multiple industries.

SenseTime Targets Higher AI Performance

According to SenseTime, its AI platform currently processes over two trillion AI tokens daily, with plans to significantly increase that capacity by the end of 2026.

The company also claims its optimized AI infrastructure can improve computing efficiency while reducing operational costs compared to traditional AI deployments.

However, these performance figures are based on the company’s internal testing and have not yet been independently verified.

Industry experts note that real-world performance often varies depending on workloads, hardware configurations, and deployment environments.

AI Chips Designed for Multiple Industries

SenseTime expects its domestic AI computing platform to support organizations across sectors including:

  • Healthcare
  • Manufacturing
  • Scientific research
  • Energy
  • Financial services
  • Smart cities
  • Autonomous systems

By providing localized AI infrastructure, the company hopes businesses can develop and deploy AI applications more efficiently without relying heavily on imported hardware.

Expanding Into Space-Based Computing

One of the most ambitious announcements was SenseTime’s partnership with aerospace company Guoxing Aerospace.

Together, the companies plan to explore space computing, where satellites could provide distributed AI computing power for applications such as:

  • Disaster response
  • Maritime operations
  • Remote communications
  • Scientific research

The company aims to launch its first computing satellite in 2026, though large-scale deployment remains a long-term objective.

Research Partnerships to Advance AI Innovation

SenseTime also signed research agreements with several leading Chinese institutions to accelerate AI development in scientific fields.

The collaboration will focus on using AI for:

  • Drug discovery
  • Material science
  • Biological research
  • Manufacturing optimization

These partnerships aim to combine advanced computing resources with academic research to solve complex scientific problems.

Challenges Still Remain

Although the Galaxy Project represents an important step for China’s AI industry, several challenges remain.

Many of SenseTime’s performance claims including processing speed, energy efficiency, and cost savings are based on internal benchmarks rather than independent evaluations.

Experts believe large-scale commercial deployment will ultimately determine whether these improvements can be consistently achieved in real-world environments.

In addition, building competitive AI chips requires continuous advances in semiconductor manufacturing, software compatibility, and ecosystem development.
